The show starts June 1st and he has made lots of little dolls that are wearing replicas of the T-Shirts he made that you can buy there at Laforet. Please come check out his psychedelic world.

私のお気に入りのTVの新番組は『Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution（ジェイミー・オリヴァーの食物革命）』です。有名なイギリス人シェフのジェイミー・オリヴァーはイギリスの学校給食の改善を手助けしてきました。そして今、彼は同じことをアメリカでやろうとしています。彼はウェストバージニア州のハンティングトンというアメリカで最も肥満度の高い街について聞き、この街の人たちをまず最初に変えようと決心したのです。この街とアメリカ全土の多くの人たちはファーストフードや加工食品を食べ過ぎており、フレッシュな果物や野菜を全くとっていません。彼は、学校ですら、ココアやイチゴミルクを添えたピザが朝食として出されているのを目のあたりにしました。このビデオでジェイミーは小学校の生徒に彼が見せた野菜の名前を質問していますが、誰も正しい答えを言えません。子供たちはトマトをジャガイモだといい、ナスを洋ナシだと思ったのです。ジェイミーが、これはケチャップの原料になるトマトだよ、と教えるとやっと皆「あぁ、ケチャップなら知ってるよ」と答えたのです。自分の食べるものを自分で料理するのは楽しいことだし、新鮮な食べものはもっと美味しいんだよと人々を説得するために、彼の前にはやるべき仕事が山積みです。

My favorite new TV show is "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution". The famous British chef Jamie Oliver has helped to change what was being offered in England for school lunches and now he is trying to do the same in America. He heard that the town Huntington, West Virginia was rated the most obese (fat) town in America so he decided to try to change the people in that town first. Many people there, and all across America, eat too much fast food / processed food and no fresh fruits and vegetables. Even in the schools, he found that pizza was being served for breakfast along with either chocolate or strawberry milk. In this clip Jamie asks elementary school children to name the vegetables he shows them and none of them get any right. The children think tomatoes are potatoes and that an eggplant is a pear. Once Jamie explains that tomatoes make ketchup they all finally say, "Oh yes I know what ketchup is." He has a lot of work to do convincing people that it is better and more fun to cook your own meals and that fresh food tastes better.

やっと太陽が戻ってきました！

この前の夜、デイヴと私はTVでやっていたアカデミー賞授賞式の後半を見ることができました。最優秀ドキュメンタリー映画のカテゴリーになったとき、私たちは『The Cove』が勝つといいなと思いつつ、『Food Inc.』もいいなと思っていたのですが、『The Cove』が選ばれたと発表されたときには思わず拍手喝さいしてしまいました。この映画は捕鯨、それも特に和歌山県太地町で行われている捕鯨とそれを止めさせようとする人たち、そして捕鯨の残酷さだけでなく、鯨肉を食すことの健康上のリスクについて訴える映画です。私は捕鯨を擁護する立場の太地町長の記事を読みました。彼は、捕鯨の長い文化的伝統と、文化によって異なる地域食の伝統は尊重されるべきだという意見でした。

第一に、私も、長期間かけて作られた文化的伝統というのは一般的に重要なものだと思います。が、時として伝統そのものが間違っているということもあります。例えば、肉体労働をさせるために奴隷を使うということ。何百年にもわたってこの悪しき伝統は存在してきました。古代エジプト人もですし、19世紀のアメリカ人ですら奴隷を使っていました。ただ存在するからといって、それが正しいということにはならないはずです。

第二に、確かに世界のあちこちで人々は動物を食用として飼育や狩猟しています。でも、知的存在として、人にはそれが生き延びるために本当に必要な行為なのか、それは理にかなった行為なのか否かということを問う力と義務があります。でなければ、私たちは、知性とノウハウによってではなく、多かれ少なかれ、本能と原始的衝動により動かされている、地球上の他の哺乳類となんら変わりはないではありませんか。

日本人の多くは、こんな風に他の日本人が悪く描かれているものなど見たくはないでしょう。でも、この映画が数ヶ月後に日本で公開されるとき、捕鯨のように、私たちの身の回りで起きている物事の真実を見出し、そして自分自身でそれについて判断するという希望をもって、皆さんがこの映画を見ることを一考してくれるようにと思います。私自身は、この映画を見ることをまだ迷っています。私には血なまぐさすぎるかもと思ったのですが、でもそういう部分は最小限でしょうし、ほとんどの部分はスパイ映画かアクション・アドベンチャー映画を見ているような気分にさせてくれるでしょう。それに、実際にその場で起きていることを撮影クルーが記録している、そのリアルな時間の長さに魅了されるでしょう。ジョージ・クルーニーとブラッド・ピットの『オーシャンズ11』や12や13とは似て非なる、リアルライフに。

英語版のトレーラーを載せておきます。日本語版はどちらかといえば水銀に汚染された鯨肉のリスクばかりに焦点を合わせているのに比べ、英語版は映画の中身により忠実です。恐らく、これがアンチ・ジャパニーズ・ムーヴィーではなく、日本人を助けるために作られた映画なのだと思ってもらえるようにそうしたのだと思います。実際、これはアンチ・ジャパニーズ・ムーヴィーなどではありません。私も日本人ですから、信用してください。

Last night Dave and I were able to catch the last half of the Academy Awards on TV. When the best documentary category came up we were mainly routing for The Cove but also liked Food Inc. When they announced that The Cove won we clapped and cheered. The movie is about the dolphin round up and killings specifically in Taiji-cho, Wakayama-ken and the people trying to stop it and expose not just the brutality of the killings but also the health risks posed but eating such meats. I just read an article about the mayor of Taiji defending the dolphin hunt because of the long cultural tradition of it and he believes that cultures have different regional food traditions that should be respected. First, I would like to say that although I think long held cultural traditions are generally important, sometimes there are traditions that are just wrong. An example being the holding of human slaves to carry out manual labor. For hundreds of years this was carried out; the ancient Egyptians had slaves and as recently as in the 19th century, Americans had slaves. Just because it exists doesn't make it right. Second, sure, people all across the globe hunt or raise and eat animals. But as intelligent beings, humans have the capacity and the obligation to question if and when this is necessary for survival and to even debate if the way we are doing so is ethical or not. Otherwise we are just the same as any other mammal on the planet who may or may not be operating more or less on instinct and primal urges rather than with their intelligence and know how.
I'm sure many Japanese people don't like seeing anything done by other Japanese in a bad light but I hope that when this movie comes out in the next few months in Japan, that you would consider watching it in hopes of finding out the truth about things that occur around us such as this and then make their own judgments about the matter afterward. I put off watching it myself because I thought that it would be too bloody for me to watch but that part is kept to a minimum and mostly it feels like you are watching a spy movie or an action/adventure movie and you will be mesmerized by the lengths to which the movie crew went in order to film what actually is going on there. If you have ever watched Ocean's Eleven, Twelve, or Thirteen with George Clooney and Brad Pitt it's like that except in real life.
I'm embedding the trailer in English here. The English version is more true to the content of the movie as a whole whereas the Japanese version really only focuses on the dangers of mercury tainted dolphin meat to the Japanese people. I think they only did that so that people would not think that it is an anti-Japanese movie and that it is to help the Japanese people only. And it really isn't an anti-Japanese movie. I'm Japanese so I hope you'll trust me on that.

Allison Schulnikというアーティストを今日見つけてしまいました。きっと彼女は私の最新のお気に入りアーティストになるような気がします。彼女の絵を見ていると、小さい頃通っていた小児科のお医者さんの待合室へ掛けられていた絵を思い出します。その絵にはピエロが描かれていて、本当は子供たちをハッピーにさせるつもりの作品だったはずですが、意図に反して、ひどくゾッとしたものです。
このアーティストはすごいアニメーションも作っています。これはGrizzly Bearというバンドのために作られた作品です。あくまでもアナログなところが私は気に入っています。

I found out about this artist Allison Schulnik today and I think she might be my new favorite artist. Her paintings remind me of this one strange painting that used hang in the waiting room at my pediatrician's office. It had clowns in it and it was supposed to be a happy piece of artwork for children but instead it was very creepy.
She also does amazing animation. This is a piece she made for the band Grizzly Bear. I love that it's totally analog.

Over the holidays I went through my record collection and put aside a small stack of singles to sell on Ebay. I do this every once in a while to slowly get rid of things I probably won't ever listen to again or to raise some money when I'm short on cash. Most of my records are from the 90's and when I say records I really mean vinyl records, not cds.
Some bands were so important to my development that I don't know if I would have ever turned out the same had I not encountered their music. The two most important in my teens/early twenties were Bikini Kill and Fugazi. Bikini Kill taught me that being a girl could be powerful and that I didn't have to be some perfect skinny blond girl to be attractive. I could be loud if I wanted to be and I could be smart and opinionated and scream and yell if I wanted to and that there were other girls just like me if I ever needed support.

Fugazi taught me about integrity and that your actions should follow your morals and values. They taught me that as a consumer I have the power to buy or not buy a company's product and that I should support companies that don't exploit people or the world. They gave me (and still give me) the strength to be the best person I can be.
