しばらくブログを更新していなくて、ごめんなさい。1週間ほど日本に行っていて、その後家に戻ると大雪で、電気も暖房も、水すらも5日間に渡って止まってしまうほどのすごさだったのです。一番大変だったのは、うちの亀たちで、この子たちは温水の中にいないとならないため、色々な方法で水を温めようと苦心しました。2日の間、デイビッドと私は、一晩中行ったり来たりしながら、水を沸かしては亀の水槽に入れた湯たんぽにお湯を入れ替えてやりました。45分おきにこの作業をしなければならなかったので、私たちは疲れきってしまいました。とうとうプロパンガスを使い果たしてしまったので、お隣さんから石油ストーブを借りてきました。これは亀の部屋を暖めるのにはとても役立ったのですが、ひどい臭いがするので、1日後に使うのを止めてしまいました。水が冷たいことで亀が病気になってしまうのではとひどく心配したのですが、亀たちは無事生き延びたので、私はとてもハッピーです。暖房がなかったので、それはそれは寒かったです！　5日間のうちのある晩などは、マイナス10度まで冷え込んだのですから！

とにかく、家の中に暖かさが戻ってきたので、私はやっと生きた心地を取り戻し、そして新たな雪嵐が来ても、その美しさを楽しむことができるようになりました。これは今日の午後のうちの中庭の風景です。

I am sorry I haven't written in a long time. I was in Japan for a week, then came home to an ice storm which left us with no electricity, heat, or running water for five days. The most difficult part was that our turtles need to be in heated water and we tried different methods to keep the water warm. For two days Dave and I stayed up all night, taking turns, boiling bottled water and putting it in hot water bottles (yudanpo) which we put in the turtle's tanks. We had to do this every 45 minutes or so and was very exhausting. We finally ran out of propane so our neighbor lent us a kerosene stove. It warmed up the turtle room well but also smelled awful so we had to stop using it after a day. I was very worried that the cold water would make the turtles sick but they survived and I am very happy about that. It was SO cold with out heat! It went down to -10 degrees celsius one of the five nights!
Anyway, I am finally feeling human again and can enjoy or current snow storm for it's beauty since inside the house is warm. Here is a look out on to the patio this afternoon.

Color Demo

私たちの友人で、画家のクリスティーナ・トロとユリシーズ・ジャクソンが週末、うちに遊びに来てくれました。ユリシーズはアクリル絵の具を扱う大企業の1つであるGolden社で働いており、新しい種類の絵の具を開発するためのリサーチを担当しています。そこで、デイヴィッドは彼に、カラー・デモをお願いしました。ユリシーズは、どうやって絵の具をミックスしたら希望の色を作れるかとか、どうやれば色と色がマッチするかとか、色々な絵の具を使ってできることを教えてくれました。

Our friends, painters Cristina Toro and Ulysses (yu-li seez) Jackson, came to visit us this weekend. Ulysses works at Golden which is one of the biggest acrylic paint companies and does research and development for them making new kinds of paints so Dave asked him to give us a color demo. Ulysses taught us how to mix paints to make them the colors you want, how to match colors, and what the different paints can do.

私たちが引っ越してきた場所は、1月になると平均気温がマイナス5度にもなります。ですから、家の暖房は重大事です。この家は各部屋にあるラジエーターで暖房されていて、そのラジエーターの中には地下のボイラーから熱湯が流れてくるのです。この家の持ち主である私の友人は、石油バーナーを木材チップを燃料にしたボイラーに入れ替えました。私たちは1日に2回、このボイラーに木材チップを満たさねばなりません。

先週、1トン分の木材チップがデリバリーされ、デイビッドが地下室に積み重ねました。

引越し以来、自分が消費するもののことについて、より深く考えるようになったのは興味深いことです。都会にいるとき、暖房のコストは家賃に含まれていました。なので、そのことについてあまり考えたことはありませんでした。今年、暖房の請求書に私はビクビクしていますが、暖房の素材コストがなんなのかという知識が深まっていくのには感謝しています。

Where we moved, the average temperature in January is minus 5 degrees Celsius. So heating the house is of great importance.
The house is heated through radiators in each room that are filled with hot water that comes from a boiler in the basement. My friend who owns our house replaced the oil burning burner with a wood chip boiler. We have to fill the boiler twice a day with bags of wood pellets.

Last week we had one ton of pellets delivered which Dave stacked in the basement.
It's interesting how much more I think about what I consume now that I've moved. In the city, the cost of our heat was included in our rent so I never thought much about it. As much as I dread the heating bill this year, I am appreciative in gaining back the knowledge of what the material cost of heat is.

今日（※11月4日）は投票日です。今朝早くオフィスまで歩いているとき、地下鉄の駅の近くで手作りのフライヤーを配っている2人の子供がいました。多分8歳くらいでしょうか、年少の子の方に私が近づいていくと、彼は私に「投票を忘れないでください！」と書かれた1枚のフライヤーをくれました。

その子と彼のお姉さんは特定の候補者を宣伝するためではなく、投票という行為自体を宣伝するためにフライヤーを配っていたのです。これには涙を誘われました。選挙に対してこれほどの熱狂ぶりを目の当たりにすることになるなんて、思ったこともありませんでした。

今、このブログを書いているうちにも、各州の開票状況がゆっくりと告知されています。あともう3時間で西海岸の最後の州の投票結果が分かります。多くの人が今日投票を行いました。NY市では投票所の多くに長い列ができました。

デイビッドと私は、もしオバマ氏が今晩勝利したら、明日はお祝いとして家中を大掃除しようと決めました。おかしなお祝いの仕方ですが、過去8年の間、ブッシュ政権下でこの国に起きていたあらゆる悪を一掃することにも似通ってると思ったので。

Today is election day. When I was walking to the office earlier this morning there were two children near the subway station giving out flyers. As I got closer the smaller of the two, maybe he was around 8 years old, handed me a hand drawn flyer and said "Please don't forget to vote!" (Insert flyer drawing) He and his sister had drawn stacks of flyers not promoting any candidate in particular but promoting the act of voting. It brought tears to my eyes. I don't think I've ever witnessed so much enthusiasm about an election, ever.
As I type this, they are slowly announcing the tally of each state with 3 more hours before the last states on the west coast close their polls. A lot of people have voted today. In New York City, there were long lines at most polling places. (Insert two pictures of long lines) David and I have decided that if Obama wins tonight we will clean and scrub the whole house as a celebration tomorrow. Funny way to celebrate but we figure it's like a cleansing of all the badness that has happened to this country over the past 8 years under Bush.

国会で国のリーダーが選ばれる日本と異なり、アメリカでは国民が大統領選に直接投票します。今年は選挙の年であり、11月4日の火曜日は重大な日です。私たちの仲間の多くは、クリントンが大統領だった時代を振り返って懐かしく思い、そして願わくばジョージ・W・ブッシュが二度と選ばれませんようにと神に祈っています。私は、ブッシュがかつて大統領に選ばれただけでなく（といっても投票数ではアル・ゴア実際には勝っていたと論議する人が大勢いるでしょうが）、こともあろうに2度までも選出されているという事実に恐怖しています。

つまるところ、今年は私たちの多くにとって、民主党が勝利し、白人以外の初の大統領が誕生するための非常に良いチャンスというわけで、特別に重要な年なのです。そして、私たちはオバマがこの戦争狂いの国家を貧者や中流クラスの人たちを助けるよう方向転換させることを願っているのです。

デイビッドと私はちょっとお使いをしに運転しているときに、ヤード・サインを数えるのが好きです。ヤード・サインは、支持者の人たちが自分たちがどの候補者を支持しているかを所有地の中で宣伝をするための看板です。私たちは（彼らの家や庭を見ているうちに）オバマ支持者にはデザインセンスの良い人はいないという結論に達しました。

私たちの友人であるShepard Faireyはオバマのもっとも有名なポスターの一つをデザインしました。

私は心底からオバマ氏の勝利を願っているとはいえ（マケインもパリンと同様怖くはありません・・・）、本当は一番のチョイスはデニス・クシニッチ氏だったのです。春に行われた民主党の最初の選挙で、私たちは彼に投票しました。彼はヴィーガンなだけでなく、アメリカ合衆国議会でもっとも進歩的な議員であり、大企業と汚職政治に対して戦っている人です。私にとって不運なことに、彼は大多数の人たちにとっては、かっこよすぎるのです。多分、いつの日か・・・・。

In America, people vote directly for their President, unlike in Japan, where the Diet chooses the country's leader. This is election year, and Tuesday, November 4th is the big day. There are many of us who can only look back on the years that Clinton was President and think fondly, and wish to God that George W. Bush had never been elected. I'm still in horror of the fact that not only was he made President once (and many people will argue that Al Gore actually won in the number of votes) but he was elected TWICE.

So this year is especially important for many of us because there is a very good chance that the Democrats will win, the first non-white man will become President, and we are hoping that he will turn this war crazed country around and help the poor and middle class.

David and I like to count yard signs while we drive around doing our errands. Yard signs are used by people who support political candidates to show who they support and advertise for them on their own property. We have made the conclusion that anyone with good design taste (seen by looking at their homes and gardens) will be for Obama.

A friend of ours Shepard Fairey designed one of the most famous Obama posters.

While I honestly hope with all my heart that Obama wins (McCain isn't nearly as scary as Palin....) my first choice would have been Dennis Kucinich. We voted for him in the Democratic primary election in the spring. Not only is he vegan, he is the most progressive member of the United States Congress and fights large corporations and dirty politics. Unfortunately for me, he is just way too cool for most people. Maybe one day........

Apple Picking

いつもだと、私は週のうち2、3日はNY市内のオフィスにミーティングや仕事をしに行くのですが、先週は、アーティストでデザイナーのShabd Simon-Alexanderが、私がNY市に行く代わりに彼女が私に会いにうちへ来たいと言ってくれました。彼女は秋冬の洋服を持ってきてくれたので、私は彼女が店のために作ってくれた暖かで美しい洋服を見せてもらい、一緒にここから出荷させました。その後で、私たちは農場へりんご摘みに歩いていきました。とても楽しかったです。家に帰ると、Shabdはとてもシンプルなアップルパイの作り方を教えてくれました。

Normally, I go down to the city to have meetings and work at the office a few days a week but this past week Shabd Simon-Alexander, the artist and designer, said she wanted to come up to our house to meet me instead of me coming down to the city. She came up with her Fall clothes and I took a look at all the warm and beautiful things she made for the store and we shipped them from here. Then we went to a farm down the road and went apple picking. It was so much fun. We came home and Shabd taught me how to bake a very simple apple pie.

Pink

小さい頃、ピンクは私の一番好きな色でした。私の部屋の壁はバブルガム・ピンクで、ベッドはフリフリのピンクのカバーで覆われていました。年月が経つうちに、私はいまでもそんなにピンク好きだとことを否定し始めたように思います。だって、あんまり少女っぽすぎますから。でも、今、花々を見ていると、私はやっぱりこの色が好きなんだという気持ちが、再び湧き上がってくるのを感じてしまいます。新しい植物を買うとき、いつもどんな色の組み合わせにするべきかですごく迷ってしまうのですが、これからは色々な深さのピンク色の花をつける植物を中心に集めてゆけばいいんじゃないかと思い始めました。写真はこちらに引っ越してきてから私が買った2種類の植物と、もう1つは既にここで咲いていた花です。

When I was little, pink was my favorite color. My room was painted a bubblegum pink and my bed was covered with frilly pink covers. Over the years I think I started to deny the fact that I still liked pink so much because it was just too girlie. But looking at flowers now, I am sensing a renewal in my favoring this color again. Since I have a really hard time staying with any kind of rigid color palate when buying new plants, I am thinking it might be a good idea from now on to collect mostly pink flowering plants in all different shades. Here are two plants that I brought upstate with me and another that I found already growing here.

Cinderella's Pumpkin Patch

私たちの新居には、すでに作付けのされた野菜畑がついてきました。この家を私たちに貸してくれた友人のアマンダは、ありとあらゆる種類の野菜のあるずいぶん大きな畑を作っていました。その多くは、「伝播作物」と呼ばれるような古来からの品種でした。私たちがここに越してきたとき、まだ蔓についたままのカボチャが一つありました。1週間後、カボチャは蔓から落ちたので家へ持ち帰り、たまに眺めては感心し、そして、いつになったらこのカボチャを切って、何かの料理にするべきだろうかと考えています。これは、うちの畑で取れた唯一の大きなカボチャなので、私たちはまるで貴重な宝石のように扱っているのです。アマンダは以前、このカボチャは「Rouge Vif D'Etampes」という品種のカボチャだと教えてくれました。調べてみたところ、あのおとぎ話の中でシンデレラの魔法使いのおばあさんが馬車に変身させたのと同じカボチャで、1880年代のパリの市場で人気があったカボチャのようです。

夜になると、ここは街中よりもずっと冷え込みます。日中、熱を吸収し、夜まで溜めこんでおくようなコンクリートがまったくないからです。まだ、ボイラーを使い始めていないので、暖を取るための方法として毎晩1本丸太を燃やしていますが、それで手足が十分暖まります。

私が炎を眺めたり、火がはぜる音を聞いたりするのが大好きです。うちの動物たちも火のそばに座るのが好きです。犬のコールマンは、私がPCをタイプしている間、暖炉の隣のソファーで眠っています。

Our new house came with a vegetable garden already planted. My friend Amanda who we are renting our house from planted a rather large garden of all different kinds of vegetables, many of which are old "heirloom" varieties. There was one pumpkin still on its vine when we got here and about a week later, it fell off, so we brought it in and have been admiring it for some time now, trying to figure out when exactly we should cut it open and make something from it. It's our only large pumpkin from the garden so we are treating it like it's a precious gemstone. Amanda told me the other day that it is called a "Rouge Vif D'Etampes" pumpkin. I looked it up and it is the kind that Cinderella's fairy godmother turned into a coach in the fairy tale and was a popular pumpkin in the markets in Paris in the 1880's.

The nights are much colder up here than in the city. No concrete to suck up all the heat during the day and keep it at night. We haven't started the boiler yet so we have been burning one log every night to warm up the house just enough so that my hands and feet aren't cold. I love watching the flames and hearing the fire crackle. The animals like to sit by the fire as well. Coleman is sleeping on the couch next to the fireplace as I type.

私はすごくワクワクしています！　私たちの新居から半時間のところにドライブ・イン・シアターがあったのです。私がまだ子供のころ、そう、6歳とか7歳の頃だったと思いますが、1950年～60年代のカルチャーにちょっとハマッていました。大部分は『ハッピー・デイズ』『ラバーン＆シャーリー』という2つのTVドラマを通じてで、その当時の私の一番お気に入りの映画は『グリース』でした。自分の車の中から野外の大きなスクリーンで映画を見る・・・、そんなことが本当に可能だなんてまったく考えていませんでした。ドライブ・イン・シアターというものがいまだに存在しているかどうかすらよく分からなかったのです。この、近所のシアターでは2本立ての特集をやっています（1本分の値段で2本の映画が観れるのです）。1人たったの＄7で、なんと火曜日には＄5で観れるのです！　しかも、新作をやっているのです！　私は自分でポップコーンを作って持っていくつもりです・・・、溶かしフェイク・バターをたっぷりかけたポップコーンを。んー、美味しそう！

I am so excited! There is a drive-in movie theater half an hour from our new house. When I was a little kid, like 6 or 7 years old, I was pretty absorbed in 1950's and 60's culture, mostly through two television shows "Happy-Days" and "Laverne & Shirley" and my favorite movie at the time "Grease". The fact that I will be able to watch a movie in my own car on a big screen outside is something I never really thought would be possible. I didn't really know they still existed. Here, they show a double feature (two movies in a row for one price) for $7 per person and only $5 per person on Tuesdays! And they are showing new films! I am going to pop my own popcorn and bring it.... with lots of melted fake butter. Yum.
