14年前、私は通っていた美大のアートセールで1枚のエッチングを＄15で買いました。当時のボーイフレンドが取っていた絵画クラスのティーチング・アシスタントをしていた、ある学生のアーティストのサポートを手助けしているぐらいの気持ちでした。私が版画を購入したKara Walkerというアーティストは、当時の卒業生でした。その1年後に私が美大を卒業した頃、彼女の初の個展を見にソーホーへ行ったのを覚えています。10年後に、現存するアーティストの中でもっとも著名なアーティストの一人として彼女が知られるようになるなんて、私はほとんど考えもしませんでした。
数ヶ月前、私はこの版画を売ったらどうなるか調べてみることにしました。オークションハウスのクリスティーズに勤めている知人女性に連絡をし、その版画を専門化に見てもらうようにしました。彼らの見積もりは、なんと＄4000～＄6000とのことでした！ そして、その版画を次の版画オークションにかけてくれた結果、見積もりには届きませんでしたが、この作品は＄2000で売れたのです。クリスティーズに手数料を払った後、私の手元に＄1500が残りました。つまり・・・・、私の初期投資に対して100倍の回収率になったといえるでしょう。悪くありません。私はこのお金を中古車の買い替えに充てることにしました。私が＄15で買った、あの小さなエッチング作品は、1台の車の半分を買えるほどになったのです！
この話の教訓は、もしあなたが気に入ったアートがあり、そのアーティストが素敵な人だということを知っているなら、そのアートを購入したっていいんじゃないか、ということです。もしかしたら、いつの日か、とても大きくて、重要で、輝かしい何かをあなたにもたらしてくれるかもしれませんよ。

Fourteen years ago I bought an etching at my college's student art sale for $15. At the time I was just thinking that I was helping to support a fellow art student, a teaching assistant for one of my then boyfriend's painting classes. Kara Walker, the artist whose print I bought, was a grad student at the time. After I graduated a year later, I remember going to her first solo show opening in Soho. Little did I know she would become known as one of the most celebrated living artists a decade later.
A few months ago I decided that I would look into selling this print I had. I got in touch with a woman I knew who worked at Christie's auction house and brought it in to show their experts. They estimated it's worth between $4000-$6000! They put it up for their next print auction and although it did not reach it's estimate, it sold for $2000. After Christie's took their share, I got a check for $1500. So.... that would be 100 times my initial investment. Not too bad. I used that money to pay for the down payment on my new used car. That little etching I bought for $15 is buying half a car!
The moral of this story is if you see art you like, if you know an artist you think is a nice person, it might not hurt to make a purchase. It may come back one day to buy you something very big, heavy, and shiny.

今週から、Little Cakes（ギャラリー）で、Brendan MonroeとEvah Fanによる新しい展示がスタートしました。作品はすべてガーデニングにインスパイアされたものばかりです。
展示の設営をしている間中、私たちはガーデニングに関するおしゃべりで作業を中断させてばかりいました。トマトがどうやって大きくなっていったかや、一生懸命に世話をしたのにうまく育たなかったもののことや、ありとあらゆるガーデニングおたくの会話で。毎月Little Cakesを訪れる人の多くが、自分の食べる野菜やハーブを育てることに興味を持っているので、みんな今回の展示を気に入ってくれるだろうと思います。
This week we started the newest Little Cakes show by artists Brendan Monroe and Evah Fan. It's all inspired by gardening.
While we were installing the show we kept stopping to trade stories about how our tomatoes were growing, what won't grow well in our gardens no matter how hard we try, and various gardening nerd topics. Many of the people who come to Little Cakes every month also are interested in growing their own food and various herbs so I hope they will be excited by this show.
先週、友達がMOMA(Museum of Modern Art)でパフォーマンスを行うお手伝いをしてきました。彼らのは「Lo Vid」というグループで、手作りのシンセサイザーを使ってアナログ・ビデオを作っています。長い時間をかけて彼らが有名になってきたことや、昔は倉庫で演奏しているノイズ・バンドとしか思われていなかった彼らが、今ではMOMAのような権威ある団体からアーティストとして認知されていることを、私は誇らしく思いました。
Last week I was asked to help my friends with their performance at MOMA (Museum of Modern Art). They are called LoVid and make analog video with home made synthesizers. I was proud to have known them for a long time and to have seen their progression from being what most people thought was just a noise band playing warehouse shows to being considered recognized artists by the establishment.
先週の日曜日、"Sumi Ink Club"というイベントをうちのギャラリーで行いました。これは、現在ロサンジェルスに住んでいるサラとリュークという2人が始めたイベントです。彼らは一緒に描いてくれる人なら誰でも、どんな人でも招待し、大きな紙の上にみんなで協力して描いて、大きな1枚のドローイングを作るのです。今週、"Sumi Ink Club"のイベントが、ここNYとロサンジェルス、サンフランシスコ、パリ、そしてインドのどこか！で行われました。すべてのドローイングを集めて、1冊の大きな本を作る計画だそうです。

On Sunday we had an event called "Sumi Ink Club" at our gallery. It is an event that was started by two people now living in Los Angeles, Sarah and Luke. They invite everyone and anyone to come draw with them on one large sheet of paper to collaborate and make one big drawing. This week, there were "Sumi Ink Club" events here in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Paris, and somewhere in India! All the drawings from these events are going to be put together to make one
big book.
The goal is not just to make a pretty picture but to gain a sense of community with people you have never met and to work together towards a common goal. Little CakesはNYで唯一のアパートメント･ギャラリーというわけではありません。アーティストのFrankie Martinも、アパートの玄関で"Beebop Gallery"というギャラリーをやっています。昨晩は、アーティストのDeya Ramsdenのオープニングがありました。Deyaは最近、UsalsAMonsterというバンドをやっているボーイフレンドのColin Langenusと一緒に暮らすために、オレゴン州からNYに引っ越してきたばかりです。二人はFrankieと同じ建物の上階に住んでいます。
Deyaは布や糸で作品を作るのが好きです。また、刺繍や織物の作品や、ぬいぐるみの立体作品も作っています。私の目は壁にかかっていた、ナマケモノみたいな動物のぬいぐるみに一瞬で釘付けになってしまいました。救出されたナマケモノの赤ちゃんが段ボール箱の中で休んでいる映像を以前、youtubeで見たときから、私はナマケモノに興味津々だったのです。Frankieにこの作品がいくらか尋ねたところ、たったの＄25でした！ ですから、もちろんこれは買わないと。今、この展示が終わったら、あの作品をうちの壁のどこにかけようかと思案中です。どこか犬が届かないところにしないと。あれは、間違いなく、犬のオモチャじゃありませんから。
Little Cakes is not the only apartment gallery in New York City. Artist Frankie Martin has a gallery in her hallway called Beebop Gallery. Last night was artist Deya Ramsden's opening. Deya recently moved the New York from Orgeon to be with her boyfriend Colin Langenus of the band UsaIsAMonster. They live upstairs from Frankie in the same building.
Deya likes to make things with fabric and thread. She makes some stuffed sculptures as well as embroideries and woven pieces. My eye immediately went to the stuffed animal hanging on the wall that looked like a sloth. I've been very interested in sloths ever since I saw a video on youtube of a rescued baby sloth resting in a cardbord box. I asked Frankie how much the piece was and it was only $25! So of course I had to buy it. I am thinking of where it will go on my wall when she show is finished. Somewhere where the dog wont be able to reach it. It's definitely not a dog toy.
