私は生涯でたった3回だけしかオペラを観たことがありません。16歳の時、イタリアで『トスカ』を観たのと、NYのメトロポリタン・オペラで『仮面舞踏会』と『魔笛』を観たのがすべてです。この3回の中で、上演時間中ずっと私の注意をひきつけていられたのは『魔笛』だけです。私の観たパフォーマンスはJulie Taymorという、カラフルで想像力豊かなコスチュームとパペットを用いることで有名な監督の作品でした。それはそれは楽しかったです！ オペラを知っている人なら、席で笑い転げてしまうほど面白いはずです。私が観たのと同じパフォーマンスのDVDが新しくリリースされました。ただ、歌だけは英語版です（私が観たのはオリジナルのドイツ語版でした）。お子さんにもお薦めできるくらい、私の大推薦できる作品です。
それと、もしNYへ来る機会があれば覚えておいてほしいのですが、メトロポリタン・オペラのチケットは前売りでも当日でも＄15から買うことができます。上階のバルコニー席だってパーフェクトに観えるし、聴こえます。素敵な洋服に身を包み、ちょっぴりドレスアップして出かけるなんて、とても楽しいことです。オペラ座の内部も非常に美しいです。

I have only seen three different operas in my life. I saw Tosca when I was 16 in Italy and I've seen Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) and Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The only one of those three that kept my attention the whole time was Die Zauberflote. The performance I saw was a production by director Julie Taymor who is known for using puppets and colorful, imaginitive costumes. It is so much fun! Who knew opera could be so fun that you would laugh in your seat. There is a new dvd out of the same performance I saw except sung in English (I saw the original German version) if you see it around I would highly recommend it even for children. Also if you are ever coming to New York, you should know that you can buy $15 tickets to the Metropolitan Opera in advance and also on the day of the show. Even sitting high up in the balcony, you can see and hear perfectly well and it's really fun to go to something dressed up in fancy clothes. The inside of the opera is really beautiful.
