私は子供の頃、踊るのがすごく好きでした。今でもダンスはまだ好きですが、でも、ほとんど家の中で・・・・パジャマを着たまま踊っています。昔はよくダンスのTVショウを見ていたのですが、その頃毎週見ていたショウのビデオクリップをいくつか見つけたので、皆さんにも見てほしくなりました。

When I was little, I really liked dancing. Actually I still like dancing but mostly in my own house..... in my pajamas. I used to watch lots of dance TV shows so I found a few clips from shows I used to watch every week to show you.
黒人のバラク・オバマ氏が大統領になる瞬間を見ることが、多くのアメリカ人にとってどれほど意味のあることか、日本に住む皆さんのうち果たしてどのくらいの方々がその意味深さを理解できるでしょうか。黒人アメリカ人の多くは、数百年前、合衆国に連れてこられたアフリカ人奴隷の子孫です。当時、彼らは通常、モノとして、あるいは個人の所有物として扱われ、売ったり買ったりでき、彼らの所有者の好きなように使えるものでした。奴隷制度が終わってからも、黒人たちは準国民の地位に甘んじなければなりませんでした。1960年代まで、黒人と他の有色人種たちは、白人アメリカ人と同等の社会的、法的権利を持てなかったのです。アメリカ南部には、「白人用」「有色人種用」と指定されたトイレや水飲み場がありました。レストランやホテルの多くは白人以外の客を断わったので、ツアー中の有名ミュージシャンですら、いくつかの街では彼らを受け入れてくれる場所を探さねばならないくらいでした。白人女性の顔を見つめたり、軽率に話しかけたからというだけの理由で、怒り狂った群集に殺されたり、リンチされることもままあったのです。

I wonder how many of you in Japan understand how meaningful it was to many Americans to watch Barack Obama become President. Many black Americans are decendents of African slaves brought to the states hundreds of years ago where they were generally treated as objects or as personal property, to be bought and sold and used as their owners pleased. Even after the end of slavery, blacks were reduced to second class citizens. Up until the 1960's, blacks and other non-whites did not have the same social and legal rights as white Americans. In the South, there were bathrooms and water fountains designated for "Whites" and "Colored". Many restaurants and hotels refused to serve non-white customers, even famous muscians on tour had to search for places that would serve them in some towns. People could even be killed, lynched by an angry mob of people, just for looking up at the face of a white woman or to speak out of turn. To be able to watch older African-Americans rejoice and cry when Obama was being sworn in was watching people see their wildest dreams come true. Parents spoke about their children with hope, that now they could aspire to be more than just a rap star or a pro athelete, they could hope to be the President of the United States. There has been a lot of pain and frustration felt by the people of this country over race, religion, gender, and sexual preference. I hope that this day brings us closer to healing the wounds felt by people of all walks of life. In his inauguration speech, President Obama spoke about sacrifice and hardwork that will be needed from each individual, not just for the sake of our selves or our own families but to bring a change to the whole of society. I hope many people will find it in themselves to act upon this call to service instead of just waiting for the government to fix everything for them. |
彼女は捨てられて、人間社会の周辺で生きている犬たちに威厳を与えました。彼女の写真からは、犬たちはそれぞれ個性をもった個人であるということが伝わってくるでしょう。私は、彼女の写真を通じて、「野良犬」はゴミなんかではなく、美しい生き物なのだという新しい視点を人々に見つけてもらいたいのです。

We've been promoting pet adoption for a few years now with our benefit art shows as well as our ARK adoption board featuring available dogs and cats from the wonderful animal shelter ARK. It's something that I want to continue even when we move out of our Aosando space to concentrate on our sales at Wall but I haven't figured out how to make that happen yet.
At least for now we have a showing of Traer Scott's photographs scheduled for the end of February at our gallery at Wall. We previously showed her work in the fall at HaNNa but we wanted to give more people a chance to see her beautiful pictures of street dogs from her travels to Mexico and Puerto Rico. She gives dignity to dogs that were thrown away and live on the edges of human society. You can see in her photographs that they are individuals with personalities and I hope that people take away a new view of "Norainu", that they are not garbage, but beautiful beings. |
I wanted to introduce you to Tara Jensen's work that will be in a new show at Wall starting 1/19. Her show is called "Frenemy Glen". A frenemy is someone that is both a friend and a rival. I think we probably all have one or two of those in our lives! I'm really looking forward to her installation. |
