14年前、私は通っていた美大のアートセールで1枚のエッチングを＄15で買いました。当時のボーイフレンドが取っていた絵画クラスのティーチング・アシスタントをしていた、ある学生のアーティストのサポートを手助けしているぐらいの気持ちでした。私が版画を購入したKara Walkerというアーティストは、当時の卒業生でした。その1年後に私が美大を卒業した頃、彼女の初の個展を見にソーホーへ行ったのを覚えています。10年後に、現存するアーティストの中でもっとも著名なアーティストの一人として彼女が知られるようになるなんて、私はほとんど考えもしませんでした。
数ヶ月前、私はこの版画を売ったらどうなるか調べてみることにしました。オークションハウスのクリスティーズに勤めている知人女性に連絡をし、その版画を専門化に見てもらうようにしました。彼らの見積もりは、なんと＄4000～＄6000とのことでした！ そして、その版画を次の版画オークションにかけてくれた結果、見積もりには届きませんでしたが、この作品は＄2000で売れたのです。クリスティーズに手数料を払った後、私の手元に＄1500が残りました。つまり・・・・、私の初期投資に対して100倍の回収率になったといえるでしょう。悪くありません。私はこのお金を中古車の買い替えに充てることにしました。私が＄15で買った、あの小さなエッチング作品は、1台の車の半分を買えるほどになったのです！
この話の教訓は、もしあなたが気に入ったアートがあり、そのアーティストが素敵な人だということを知っているなら、そのアートを購入したっていいんじゃないか、ということです。もしかしたら、いつの日か、とても大きくて、重要で、輝かしい何かをあなたにもたらしてくれるかもしれませんよ。

Fourteen years ago I bought an etching at my college's student art sale for $15. At the time I was just thinking that I was helping to support a fellow art student, a teaching assistant for one of my then boyfriend's painting classes. Kara Walker, the artist whose print I bought, was a grad student at the time. After I graduated a year later, I remember going to her first solo show opening in Soho. Little did I know she would become known as one of the most celebrated living artists a decade later.
A few months ago I decided that I would look into selling this print I had. I got in touch with a woman I knew who worked at Christie's auction house and brought it in to show their experts. They estimated it's worth between $4000-$6000! They put it up for their next print auction and although it did not reach it's estimate, it sold for $2000. After Christie's took their share, I got a check for $1500. So.... that would be 100 times my initial investment. Not too bad. I used that money to pay for the down payment on my new used car. That little etching I bought for $15 is buying half a car!
The moral of this story is if you see art you like, if you know an artist you think is a nice person, it might not hurt to make a purchase. It may come back one day to buy you something very big, heavy, and shiny.

6月13日（金）は、私の35歳の誕生日であると同時に、史上初のナショナル・ピジョン（鳩）・デイでした。私のブログを最初から読んで下さっていたら、私がどれほど鳩好きかご存知でしょう。ですから、私は両者をお祝いするために、丸1日ギャラリーをお休みして、鳩の形のヴィーガン・クッキーを焼き、セントラル・パークで行われたナショナル・ピジョン・デイのイベントに持ってゆきました。
クッキーはプレーンのまま、アイシングやデコレーションをせずに持ってゆき、その場でデコレーションをしました。友達の娘たち、RamaとDlisa（LoVidのカイルとタリのお嬢さんたちです）もヴィーガンで、一つめのトレイのアイシングを手伝ってくれました。公共のイベントではヴィーガンの参加者が稀なため、めったに食べる機会がないからと言って、二人はたいそう興奮していました。二人ともそれぞれ3枚のクッキーを食べました！
クッキーを無料で配るのはとても楽しかったです。みんな、何か無料でもらうとビックリしていました。特に、明らかに時間と愛情をかけて作られたと分かるような手作りのものをもらったときには。
通常、誕生日にはプレゼントを受け取るものですが、自分の誕生日に何かを与えるなんて、なんとも素敵な経験でした。もしかしたら、毎年続けるかもしれません。
Friday, June 13th was my 35th birthday as well as the first ever National Pigeon Day. If you've been reading my blog from the beginning, you know how much I like pigeons. So to celebrate both days, I took the day off from my gallery and made vegan cookies in the shape of pigeons to give away at the National Pigeon Day event at Central Park.
I brought them plain, without the icing/decoration, and did that there. My friends daughters Rama and Dlisa (who are daughters of Kyle and Tali from LoVid) who are also vegan helped me ice the first tray. They were so excited because they rarely get to eat at public events because they aren't usually vegan. Both girls had three cookies each!
It was a lot of fun giving them away for free. People are surprised receiving anything for free, especially anything handmade that obviously took lots of time and care.
Normally we receive presents for our birthdays but it was such a nice experience giving things away for my birthday that maybe I'll keep doing that every year.
私たちがリハビリを施していたあの亀は、肺炎からは回復したのですが、餌を食べなくなってしまいました。口から泡を吹き始めたので、またもや獣医へ連れて行き、X線を撮り、胃腸が正常に機能するための新しい薬をもらってきました・・・・。これが、1週間半前のことで、今、彼女は首の上から胃の中に通されたチューブで栄養を取っている状態です。こうしないと、もらってきた薬をあげても、そのほとんどを吐き出してしまうからです。
このチューブのおかげで、彼女は『スタートレック』のボーグみたいな格好です。ええ、そうなのです。私はSFオタクなんです。

The turtle we are trying to rehabilitate recovered from her pneumonia but then stopped eating. She started foaming at the mouth so we took her to the vet again, got x-rays, new medications for her stomach and intestines to work properly..... that was a week and a half ago and now she also has a feeding tube placed in the top of her neck that goes to her stomach because the medicine we were feeding through her mouth mostly kept being spit up.
The feeding tube makes her look like a Borg from Star Trek. Yes, I am a total Science Fiction nerd. If you can read English, Ichigo now has her own blog at http://ichigotheturtle.blogspot.com
今週から、Little Cakes（ギャラリー）で、Brendan MonroeとEvah Fanによる新しい展示がスタートしました。作品はすべてガーデニングにインスパイアされたものばかりです。
展示の設営をしている間中、私たちはガーデニングに関するおしゃべりで作業を中断させてばかりいました。トマトがどうやって大きくなっていったかや、一生懸命に世話をしたのにうまく育たなかったもののことや、ありとあらゆるガーデニングおたくの会話で。毎月Little Cakesを訪れる人の多くが、自分の食べる野菜やハーブを育てることに興味を持っているので、みんな今回の展示を気に入ってくれるだろうと思います。
This week we started the newest Little Cakes show by artists Brendan Monroe and Evah Fan. It's all inspired by gardening.
While we were installing the show we kept stopping to trade stories about how our tomatoes were growing, what won't grow well in our gardens no matter how hard we try, and various gardening nerd topics. Many of the people who come to Little Cakes every month also are interested in growing their own food and various herbs so I hope they will be excited by this show.
