先週、友達がMOMA(Museum of Modern Art)でパフォーマンスを行うお手伝いをしてきました。彼らのは「Lo Vid」というグループで、手作りのシンセサイザーを使ってアナログ・ビデオを作っています。長い時間をかけて彼らが有名になってきたことや、昔は倉庫で演奏しているノイズ・バンドとしか思われていなかった彼らが、今ではMOMAのような権威ある団体からアーティストとして認知されていることを、私は誇らしく思いました。
Last week I was asked to help my friends with their performance at MOMA (Museum of Modern Art). They are called LoVid and make analog video with home made synthesizers. I was proud to have known them for a long time and to have seen their progression from being what most people thought was just a noise band playing warehouse shows to being considered recognized artists by the establishment.
Leif Ritcheyは「Flowers」というブランドのデザイナーの一人です。彼はとっても素敵なユーモアのセンスの持ち主で、今日はなんとジャケットに大きな葉っぱをくっつけて着ていました。

うちの若い方の猫、Hopi（ニックネームはMuncho）は陽気な子です。今日撮ったこの写真は、デイビッドが彼の古い絵からはがしたビニールを使って遊んでいるMunchoです。Munchoはいつも注目を集めたがっていて、誰も見てくれないと、注意を引くためになにかとてもドラマティックなことをやりたがります。また、欲しいものがもらえないときは、まるで人間の子供のような泣き声を立てます。本当に甘えん坊のチビちゃんです。でも、可愛い子なんですけれどね。
Our youngest cat Hopi (nicknamed Muncho) is hilarious. This is a picture of him tonight playing in some plastic that David took off one of his old paintings. Muncho always wants attention and when he doesn't get it he will do something very dramatic to make you notice. He also makes sounds like he is a human child that is about to cry if he doesn't get what he wants. He is a spoiled brat. A cute one though.
うちのバスルームは、私たちが2年前にここに引っ越してきたときから、色んな動物たちの「一時里親」となってきました。2羽の鳩、約10匹の猫たちがここに預けられてきましたが、今、うちには初めて亀の里子が預けられています。
私は彼女のことをイチゴと名づけました。約25cmの英名「Red Ear Slider Turtle」ですが、和名はよく知りません（訳注：和名はミシシッピアカミミガメ）。彼女は肺炎と内部感染症を併発し、とても重病です。10日の間、抗生物質を毎朝注射しないとなりません。彼女がうちに来た時は、鼻血が出ていて、甲羅はまるで誰かにハンマーで叩かれでもしたような痕がついており、まったく酷い有様でした。デイビッドと私はバスタブを彼女に譲り渡し、温水器とヒートランプとサーモメーターを買って、彼女を常に暖めておけるように、けれど暑くなりすぎないようにしました。数時間おきに始終、温水器がきちんと作動しているかチェックしなければなりません。
アニマル・レスキューをするためにはとてもお金がかかるので、友人の多くはイチゴの治療費の助けに、といってカンパをしてくれました。こんな素晴らしい友人たちがいて、私たちはとてもラッキーです。
日本ではスッポンを食べる人たちがいることも知っていますし、日本のTV番組でスッポンの頭を切っているところを見たこともありますが、どうしてこんなに興味深い生き物を傷つけられるのか、私には理解できませんでした。イチゴのゆったりした動きや、彼女がまわりの世界を見ている様子は、私たち人間の行動とはまったく異なっていて、それをただ見つめているだけでとても面白いものです。いつか、もっと大勢の人たちが、亀や、地球上の他の全生物のことを大事にしてくれるようになるよう願ってやみません。
イチゴが早く良くなるよう、皆さんも祈ってあげてください。

Our bathroom has fostered (i think the right translation is like ichiji sato oya or smoething) many animals since we moved in two years ago. Two pigeons, about 10 cats, and now we have our first turtle foster animal.
I've named her Ichigo. She is about 25cm long and is a Red Ear Slider turtle in English but I'm not sure what that is in Japanese. She is very sick and has pneumonia and an internal infection. We have to give her antibiotic injections every morning for the next ten days. When she came to us she even had a bloody nose and she had marks on her shell like someone hammered at it trying to open it up. It's really awful. David and I have given up our bathtub for her habitat and have bought a water heater, heat lamps and thermometers to keep her warm enough but not too hot. We obsessively check to make sure it is working properly every few hours.
It's very expensive to be doing animal rescue so many of our friends have donated money to help pay for her vet bill and care. We are so lucky to have such great friends.
I know that some people eat suppon in Japan and I have even seen them cutting off their heads on cooking shows in Japan but I don't understand how anyone would want to harm such interesting beings. Just watching how slow Ichigo's movements are and how she looks out at the world is really fun and so different from our own. I hope one day more people appreciate turtles and every other living being on earth.
