皆さんはチャンピオンになりそうな犬の里親になれるなんて夢にも考えたことがないと思います。きっと血統書付きの由緒正しい犬でないとチャンピオンなんてなれない、と思っているに違いないでしょう。テルマを見てごらんなさい。テルマは私がボランティアしているシェルターから最近もらわれていった犬です。フリスビーがもともと大得意でしたが、絶対に、すごい速さでもっともっと上手になります。この子の里親たちはディスク・ドッグ競争（フリスビー）に出るのですが、私は彼女たちがどんな演技を思いつくのか見るのが待ちきれません！
この短いブログ投稿の教訓があるとすれば、こんな感じでしょうか。「里子だからという理由で犬を判断してはならない。里子の犬だって他のどんな犬にもひけをとらないくらい・・・それどころか、もっと良いことだってある」。テルマのビデオを見てみてください。皆さんの飼っている犬でこんなことができる子はきっといないでしょう。
I bet you never thought you could adopt a dog that was ready to be a champion. I bet you think you have to get some kind of pure bred dog with papers for that. Meet Thelma. She was recently adopted from the shelter I volunteer at. She already excels at Frisbee and I bet she will get better and better very fast. Her adoptive moms both compete in Disk Dog competitions (Frisbee) and I can't wait to see what kind of routine they come up with. I guess the moral to this short blog post is "Don't under estimate dogs that are up for adoption. They are just as good as any other dog..... or better." Check out Thelma's video. I bet your dog can't do what she's doing.
どうして日本の企業や個人はもっと時間やお金をチャリティーに寄付しないのだろう、と私は常々不思議に思っていました。そして、気づいたのですが、ほとんどのアメリカ人はチャリティーをもっとも重要な美徳の一つと考えるクリスチャンのバックグラウンドを持っているのに対し、日本の人たちは、一般的に、世界中でもっとも寛大な国民になりうる反面、貧しい人や援助を必要とする人たちに対して常に与えるようにとは教育されていないのではないかと。アメリカ合衆国政府は、企業や個人に対して、チャリティーに対してお金や品物を寄付するのを奨励しているくらいです。チャリティーに寄付した物や現金などは、1年間の税務申告をする際に減税対象になります。
ですから、例えば、Meow Mixという会社が捨て猫の世話をする非営利団体にキャットフードを寄付した場合を見てみると、Merow Mix社は期限切れ間近のキャットフードを寄付することで減税という恩恵を受けることができ、非営利団体はキャットフードを得ることができるというわけなのです。これは「Win-Win（どちらにとってもメリットのある）」の状況です。
少し前、オバマ大統領が就任したとき、世界をより良くするために、彼が国民へ向けてどのように社会への関与やボランティアを呼びかけたかについて書きました。政府だけが仕事をするのではなく、みんな次第なんだ、と。常にこういうことをブログに書き続けることで、少なくとも誰か一人はこれを読んでくれて、もしかしたらその人はボランティアや寄付のようなチャリティーを見つけようと思ってくれるんじゃないかと、私は願っています。私のブログの投稿はこういう内容のものばかりかもしれません。なぜなら、それは私が毎日考えていることだからなのです。世界はきっともっと幸せな場所になりうるはずです。私たちみんながそうしようと思って行動すれば。
I used to wonder why more companies and individuals in Japan weren't donating their time and money to charities. Then I realized that most Americans come from some kind of Christian background where charity is one of the most important virtues, and although I think that Japanese people in general can be the most generous people in the world, they were not brought up to always try to give to the poor or those who need help. The American government even has incentives for companies as well as individuals to give money or products to charity. Those items or cash are tax deductible at the end of the year when you file your yearly income taxes.
So for example, you will see a company like Meow Mix donate trucks filled with cat food to a non-profit group who cares for street cats. Meow Mix can get rid of merchandise that is about to expire and also gets a tax break, and the non-profit gets free food for the animals. It's a win/win situation.

I wrote a while back when President Obama was inaugurated how he was calling on citizens to get involved, volunteer, and help make the world better; that it was up to everyone, not just governments to do the work. I always hope by writing this kind of blog entry that at least one person reading it might get inspired to find a charity to volunteer with or donate to. You'll probably keep seeing entries like this because it's something I think about everyday. The world can be a happier place if we all try to make it happen.

約1ヶ月前にもも世と一緒に植えたラディッシュがほぼできてきました。まだ見たことがない初めて植える品種だったので、何本か抜いて見てみました。左のはまだ熟しきっていない「Sparkler」というラディッシュで、右のは「French Breakfast」というラディッシュです。French BreakfastはマイルドなのでSparklerより味は好きなのですが、Sparklerはものすごくキュートでかわいいので。
私はなんでもコレクションしたがるタイプの人間で、しかもラディッシュはすごく早く簡単に育てられるので、ラディッシュの種を集めることが自分にとっての収穫になるような気がするんです。単にその違いを見るためだけにもっともっと色んな品種を育ててみたいのです。私はもうすでに完全な「トマトヘッド」になっていて、ものすごくたくさんのトマトの種を蒔こうとしています。合計60種類もの種が地面に蒔かれるのを今か今かと待っているんですが、たぶん12種類分の場所しかありません。少なくとも1種につき2つで20植えられるように、解決方法を見つけないとなりません。もっともっと場所が必要！！！
The radishes we planted with Momoyo about a month ago are almost ready. I pulled a few up to take a look at them since they were new varieties that I hadn't seen before. One the left are immature "Sparkler" radishes and on the right is a "French Breakfast" radish. The French Breakfast one was milder so I liked the taste better but the Sparklers were so cute and pretty.
I am the kind of person who can get obsessed with collecting and because radishes are so easy and fast to grow, I feel a little pull coming my way in the way of radish seed collecting. I would love to grow more and more varieties just to see the differences. I am already a "Tomato Head" and totally over did it, starting way too many tomato seeds. I have a total of 60 seedlings almost ready to go into the ground. I maybe have room for 12. I have to come up with a solution to at least be able to plant two of each variety I started which would be 20. More room more room!!!!

やっとここにも春が訪れ、小さな花々があちらこちらで咲き始めました。うちから森へと続く小道のまわりも、いたるところ小さな花火のようなたんぽが咲き誇っています。
Now that Spring is here little flowers are blooming all over the place. On the trail that leads to the woods from the house, there are tons of dandelions everywhere that look like little bursts of fireworks.

私の小さな苗たちはみんなすくすくと育っています。デイブが私のために作ってくれた苗用の温室から外へ出せるくらい大きくなった苗もあります。
まだ温室の中にいる私のお気に入りは、パープルペトラ・バジルとマリーゴールドの苗全種類です。パープルペトラ・バジルはとても珍しい色で綺麗で、マリーゴールドはすごくスパイシーな香りがします。
私たちは頑丈なプラスティック・クリップが届くのを待っています。それが届いたら、今週後半、小さな温室を作って、もっとたくさんの苗を外に出せます。トマトなど大きくなりすぎてしまって、小さいのが沢山生えてきているので、本当にもっと場所が必要なのです！
それから、私がカメラを壊したときに撮ろうとしていた写真をお見せします。これは、通称「Macy」と呼ばれている猫です。母猫です。彼女は本当はうちのご近所さんの猫なのですが、冬の間にうちの玄関に居ついてしまったのです。とても愛らしい猫で、うちの中に入ってくれないかなと願っているんですが・・・。彼女は極上の爪先をもっていて、それはそれはキュートなんです。
My little seedlings are all growing. Some are big and cold hardy enough to be outside in the cold frame that Dave built me.
My favorites that are still inside are the Purple Petra basil and all of my marigold seedlings. The Purple Petra basil is so unusually colored and pretty and the marigolds smell really spicy.
We are waiting for an order of strong plastic clips that we are going to use to make a small greenhouse later this week and I should be able to move more seedlings outside then. My tomatoes are getting too big and I have so many babies that I really need more space!
I also wanted to show you what I was trying to take a picture of when I broke my camera. This is Macy aka. Mama Cat. She is really our neighbor's cat but she has been living on our porch since the winter. She is really sweet and I wish I could bring her inside...... She has extra toes which are really cute.

うちの大きなカメのイチゴは秋に半冬眠状態になりました。めったに食べなくなり、ほとんど動かなくなります。でも、春が訪れた最初の週、イチゴは、まるである種の体内時計を持っているかのように、ひとりでに活動し始めました。今はもう水槽の中を泳ぎまわり、足場をよじ登り、レタスや人参や他の野菜を食べたりします。そして、ついに、私が手であげる限りはペットフードも食べてくれそうになりました（イチゴは前までは何か好物の中に隠してやらないとペットフードは食べたがらなかったのです）。手で餌をやるときはとても注意しないとなりません。たまにイチゴの口に指が挟まることがあるのですが、それはそれは痛いので！
天気の良い日には、私たちはイチゴを外に散歩に連れ出してやります。今年の夏はイチゴのために特別なアウトドア・エリアを建ててあげたいと思っています。
Ichigo, my big turtle, went into a semi-hibernation in the fall. She barely ate and barely moved around. First week of spring, she started getting active all on her own, like she has some kind of internal clock. She is now back to swimming around and climbing on her dock in her tank, eating all her lettuce, carrots, other veggies and she will now finally eat her pellet food as long as I hand feed it to her. (She would only eat those if I hid it in something else she really liked before) I have to be very careful when I hand feed her because every once in a while my finger get stuck in her mouth and it really hurts!
We are taking her out for her walks again outside on nice days. This summer we are hoping to finally build her a seasonal outdoor area.

私のカメラがようやく修理から戻ってきました！
ここに載せた写真は、今私が専用の苗床用照明の下で育てている苗です。外はまだ寒すぎて、多くの野菜は土に直接植えても育たないので、私は家の中に3つの棚を作って、そこに寒さに弱い小さな苗をぎっしり集め育てています。同時に、家の外に小さな温室のような「冷床」を作って、そこでは寒い気候にわりと適応しやすい種類の苗を育てています。また、先週、外の地面に直接えんどう豆とラディッシュを植えつけました。今週は本当は蕪とえんどう豆をもっとたくさん植えるつもりだったのですが、時間がなくてできませんでした。早くやらないと！
| My camera is finally fixed! These are pictures of some of the seedlings that I am growing under florescent lights right now. It is still too cold outside to plant most vegetables directly into the soil so I have three shelves inside with lots of little seedlings that are sensitive to cold and two outdoor "cold frames" which are like mini green houses that are holding seedlings that are more adaptable to cold weather. We planted peas and radish directly into the ground last week and I have been meaning to plant turnips and more peas this week but haven't had enough time. I have to do it soon. |
